Taking control of his father's tobacco company in the 1880's, James Buchanan Duke (1856 – 1925) installed the first automated cigarette-rolling machines and by 1890 monopolized the American cigarette market. Duke Power created hydroelectric energy for brother Benjamin's textile mills and expanded rapidly to supply many industries, towns and cities in North and South Carolina. His only child Doris, "the richest girl in the world", was a jazz pianist and champion surfer who traveled the world on a private Boeing 737 collecting art and plants for Duke Gardens in Hillsborough, New Jersey.
