At the age of 21, Henry Clay Frick (1849 – 1919) with two cousins created Frick Coke Company. By 1880 H.C. Frick & Company controlled 80% of the coal output of Pennsylvania. The industrialist, financier and art patron survived an assassination attempt while ruthlessly enriching himself with coke manufacturing, steel, railroads, real estate and fine art. Once called “the most hated man in America,” he bequeathed Frick Park to Pittsburg, while his New York City mansion is today the home of the celebrated Frick Collection.
