Born to a close associate of J.J.A., Moses Taylor (1806 - 1882) began as a sugar broker and rose to control the National City Bank of New York (Citibank) and the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western railroad. Other investments included the Moses Taylor & Co. import business and the first transatlantic telegraph company. One of the wealthiest men of the 19th century, he was not a philanthropist during his life; his heirs were prominent benefactors of Princeton University.
